Florida Gulf Coast University Prepares for the Upcoming Season Despite Challenges
FGCU head coach David Derios wasn’t given an easy hand this season but he’s reportedly working hard to whip the team into shape in time for next year’s spring season. The team is still working to overcome the effects of Hurricane Ian, which hit the team’s home of Fort Myers just a couple of weeks ago, damaging nearly 400 buildings across the community.
Derios’s difficulties are only amplified by 14 new girls coming onto the team at a time when practice hasn’t been a viable option. Nevertheless, Derios seems confident that the FGCU Eagles will be able to come together and play competitively over the next few months. Derios has been quoted as saying, “I think our team has responded very well to the adversity and I have faith in their abilities.”
With three full months left on the calendar for the girls to train and get to know each other, there is still time for the team to come together and make a run at the conference title.
Legendary Club Coach Steve McNee Passes Away
The fastpitch softball community was dealt a devastating blow this week with the news of Steve McNee’s passing at age 76. McNee was a well-known and respected club coach who had been working with the sport for over 30 years. He was widely considered to be one of the best in the business, helping to develop some of the top talents in the nation.
For years, McNee traveled with So Cal Athletics, USA Athletics, and the Batbusters, and had even taken his teams to victory at the Colorado 4th of July tournaments and PGF Nationals. McNee’s sudden passing has left many shocked and saddened and his loss will be felt deeply by those who knew him.
